If You Live In Northern California, especially Sacramento Plumbing the codes have gotten tough.  You pretty much can not do anything anymore with out a plumbing permit.  I have been plumbing in Sacramento for 25 years and am now the plumbing manager of Park Mechanical Plumbing & Sewer.  I spend a lot of time writing help article for business owners & home owners because we are all about helping the customer.  I will have an article on the steps to replace a water heater but before I write one I need to write this.

Back in the day a water heater was a no problem, you take the old on out and put the new one in and use the old connections and no big deal.  Even for a Sacramento Plumbing Company it was about a $1300 dollar job they buy the water heater & put it in and collect the money.  Well let me tell you not any more, now Water Heater Replacements have the biggest code violation then any other plumbing job.  There are a couple reasons for this number one actually water heater replacements always needed a plumbing permit but no plumbers pulled one.   Number two they want someone to expect your water heater to make sure everything is connected properly so it does not blow up in your home.  yes I said blow up,  now I’m not trying to scare you but that can happened especially a Gas Water Heater. I mean the plumber is messing with a “Gas Line” & every one makes mistakes even a professional right?  Well look at a pro football player for example.  That should tell you everything. Though I Want you to learn how to replace a gas water heater  Even professionals make mistakes.  So not only should you not put a water heater in your self you should make sure you have a reputable plumbing company to put in your water heater.  They will make sure every thing is up to code & will make sure you have an updated gas valve & Water Valve.  Actually they will  switch your old gate valve to a Ball Valve.  The old gate valve always start to leak & will stop working.  Please be safe if you try to replace your water heater.
