How to help keep a Tankless Water Heater

With time, a tankless water heater can collect minerals that can build up on and erode the walls inside the tank's heating chamber. To effectively maintain and clean your tankless water heater, you will need to get rid of and remove the mineral deposits from the tank at least once per year. Continue reading to learn how you can maintain the tankless water heater to ensure its optimal performance and efficiency.

Step 1: Turn off the power supply for the tankless water heater
This can be performed by shutting off the main gas or turning off the circuit breaker for electrical devices.

Step 2: Close and turn off the 3 water valves connected to your tankless water heater.
This procedure should stop cold water from flowing into the water heater and prevent hot water from emerging during the cleaning process.
The water valves consist of a cold water valve that might be colored blue, a hot water valve that may be colored red, and a third main valve that flows the water into the home.

Step 3: Remove the purge port valve caps carefully from the purge valves found on each of the cold and hot water valves.
The purge valves have little handles that resemble the letter "T"
This procedure is performed to minimize any pressure that has built inside the valves and can prevent excess hot water from shooting out and coming into contact with your skin.
There might be pressure when removing the purge port valve caps, therefore it's very essential to make sure the hot water valve is totally and accurately shut off for safety purposes.
Handle each cap carefully to be sure the runner washer sealing discs stay in place, which are required for your valves to operate properly.

Step 4: connect your hosing lines to each of the 3 valves.
If the manufacturer of the tankless water heater didn't provide you with hosing lines, you can purchase them from your retail store specializing in home repair or water heater unit. The hosing lines will have to be long enough to get between the water heater and the bucket.
You might need to consult your manual provided by the tankless water heater's manufacturer or phone the manufacturer directly for precise directions in regards to this process.
Sometime, this process may require you to use a sump pump and connect hoses that will discharge and flush water from the tankless water heater using the cold and hot water valves.

Step 5: Open the purge port valves by turning them perpendicularly to the position of the cold and hot valves.

Step 6: Use 2.5 gallons (9.46 liters) of undiluted white vinegar to clean the tankless water heater at all times instead of chemical substance solutions.
Since your tankless water heater is most likely the way to obtain all your water supply and bathing water, using chemical cleaning solutions may be extremely harmful to your health.

Step 7: Do the flushing and draining process by following the directions provided by the manufacturer of your tankless water heater.
This procedure can take up to 45 minutes.

Step 8: Close the purge port valves by twisiting the "T" shaped handles after the flushing procedure has been completed.

Step 9: Detach and take off the hosting lines from each water valve.

Step 10: Replace the purge port valve caps onto the purge valves.
Tighten the caps completely and securely without damaging the rubber sealing discs located inside the caps.

Step 11: Check with the manufacturer's manual of the tankless water heater for exact directions on how to safely re-start the water heater unit.
This process can need you to rotate and open the cold and hot water valves so they are parallel to the position of the main valve that leads into the house.

Step 12: Turn on the hot water tap in your sink slowly and gradually to let the air to move through the pipe.
Continue to run the water until eventually it runs steadily without air escaping.
This procedure can take up to 2 or 3 minutes.
